Life Without Cell Phones

I only scarcely remember a time without cell phones.  I was probably 5 or 6 (I’m totally guessing here) when my mom got her first one.  And even after she got it, the rest of our family didn’t have one.  I memorized house numbers.  Work numbers.  If I needed to talk to someone, I needed to know their schedule and the number to reach them where they were at that time.

Its not like that anymore.

Monday was the second day in two weeks that I forgot to bring my cellphone with me when I left the house.  I first noticed the difference when I kept reaching for my phone to check the time.  There are clocks all around me but its just a habit to check my phone.  Not only that, but I was only able to connect with my friends and family using land lines or instant messaging services (like Yahoo or AIM) on the computer.  And on my lunch break, I was completely unreachable by my friends, family, and even my coworkers.

It was both unsettling and refreshing all at once.  I felt free, but I felt exposed as well.  I enjoy the safe feeling that comes with having a phone.  Everywhere I go around here, there is cell service.  Only in the mountains do I begin to lose service but that’s to be expected.  Its just reassuring to know I can call for help if something happens.

Its also very handy having a cell phone.  If you have a smart phone, like me, you’ve no doubt taken advantages of the internet on more than one occasion   Being able to pull up Google and get some facts is great when proving your friends wrong.  But even things as simple as a calculator are available.  I personally use mine as my alarm clock also.  They truly are incredible machines.

Its hard to imagine what it was like living day to day life without cell phones.  My parents did it, but given the option now, they always grab their phone.  I don’t know though, part of me wants to start leaving my phone at home now and then.  It would be a good exercise in independence and self reliance.  But then again, what if something happens and my family needs me?  Our cell phones are almost too important to leave at home now aren’t they?  What do you think?  Could you go a whole day or week without your phone?

**  Depending on how the rest of today goes, I may get an ammo update out this afternoon or tomorrow  **

You are so spoiled lol 🙂 We never had cell phones growing up; we had corded telephones and pay phones. Always needed to have change just in case you had to make a call.

What’s a pay phone? haha. Just kidding. And just because my parents had a phone doesn’t mean I did. I got my first one when I was like 16. And that was JUST for calls.

If I didnt have a girlfriend, I dont think it would really be that bad. Thats the only person I stay in constant contact with every day. The weekends are the only time my phone becomes really active with other contacts. I would imagine going w/o a phone would be like de-activating your facebook or twitter, in a sense. It cuts you off from alot of instant contacts. Ive been w/o a facebook for over a year now. It sucked the first week, but I now realize it served no purpose in my life, other than drama & gossip.

Thanks for commenting. I only had Facebook for a few months and I ditched it. Convinced my fiance to do the same recently. Its been good for both of us. I guess my only concern is my parents or fiance being able to reach me in an emergency. I wouldn’t want to be unreachable if they needed me right away.
